The Center for Favela Studies (CEFAVELA) is accepting applications for a postdoctoral fellowship position within the project “Analysis of Urban Upgrading Programs and Projects in Favelas: Possibilities, Limitations, and Challenges.” CEFAVELA is one of the newly established Research, Innovation, and Dissemination Centers (CEPIDs) funded by the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) and hosted at the Federal University of ABC (UFABC). The center is dedicated to research on favelas.
The call is open to both Brazilian and international applicants who hold a PhD degree awarded no more than seven years prior to the application deadline. Applications must be submitted by June 25, 2025.
The project intends to develop a methodology to evaluate upgrading projects through a broad
approach that covers issues such as:
* characterization of housing conditions;
* integration of housing units and their needs for improvements;
* the design of the urban fabric;
* the alignment with infrastructure projects;
* risk elimination and mitigation; and
* the integration of favelas within the broader dynamics of cities in which they are located.
The selected candidate will receive a FAPESP Postdoctoral Fellowship, which includes a monthly stipend of R$ 12,000.00, plus a Research Contingency Fund equivalent to 10% of the annual stipend, intended to cover unforeseen expenses directly related to the research activities.

About CEFAVELA:
Based at the Federal University of ABC (UFABC), CEFAVELA is a Research, Innovation, and Dissemination Center (CEPID) funded by FAPESP, dedicated to conducting research, training human resources, transferring knowledge, and disseminating information about favelas. CEFAVELA works in close collaboration with institutions, grassroots movements, and organizations committed to the territorial agenda of favelas. Through an interdisciplinary and multi-scalar approach, CEFAVELA aims to produce, organize, and share knowledge that deepens the understanding of the territorial dynamics of favelas, the reproduction of spatial inequalities, and the limits and potentials of policies and programs aimed at improving these territories in the context of contemporary urbanization.
