CEFAVELA Opens Call for Two Postdoctoral Research Positions

Applications may be submitted by email until August 10. Please refer to the call for eligibility requirements and the list of required application documents.

The Center for Favela Studies (CEFAVELA) is inviting applications for two postdoctoral research positions associated with the following research projects: “Real Estate Markets in Favelas” and “Technical Networks and the Digitalization of Territory in Favelas.”

CEFAVELA is one of the newly established Research, Innovation and Dissemination Centers (CEPIDs) funded by the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) and hosted at the Federal University of ABC (UFABC). The Center is dedicated to advancing interdisciplinary research on favelas.

Applications are welcome from Brazilian and international candidates who obtained their PhD degree no more than seven years prior to the application deadline. Applications will be accepted until August 10, 2026.

The research project “Real Estate Markets in Favelas” aims to develop an innovative theoretical framework and related empirical research methods to advance the understanding of contemporary real estate markets in favelas and their connections with broader urban real estate dynamics. The project seeks to generate new knowledge on emerging processes of property production, development, and circulation within favelas, examining issues such as the role of the State, construction and real estate development firms operating in both formal and informal markets, as well as the emergence of actors linked to illicit economies that compete for control over the regulation of the built environment in these territories.

The project “Technical Networks and the Digitalization of Territory in Favelas” focuses on critical urban studies examining new territorial dynamics associated with the digitalization of favelas and the growing presence of technical networks supporting circulation and communication. The research investigates emerging urban technopolitics in favelas, communication dynamics, and the challenges posed by large-scale disinformation for community mobilization. It also examines corporate strategies and forms of urban economic activity enabled by the digitalization of territory, including logistics, mobility, and commerce mediated by technical networks. In addition, the project seeks to identify and analyze community-led alternatives and local appropriations of these networks that foster counter-hegemonic forms of territorial organization and knowledge production.

The FAPESP Postdoctoral Fellowship provides a monthly stipend of BRL 12,570, in addition to a Technical Reserve corresponding to 10% of the annual fellowship amount, in accordance with FAPESP regulations.

General eligibility requirements include:

  • a PhD degree (or equivalent) awarded within the past seven (7) years;
  • proficiency in Portuguese;
  • full-time dedication to the research project; and
  • availability for on-site work.

Applicants must also meet the project-specific qualifications described in the respective call.
